EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF
THE SCALE LEVELS IN SPALL FRACTURE OF D16 ALUMINUM

A.E. Mayer, S.A. Atroshenko, E.N. Borodin

Abstract

Results of microstructural investigation of the D16 aluminum spall surface are presented in comparison with the numerical simulation of the fracture process. A fracture model based on the plasticity driven growth of voids is used in simulation. Different scale levels of fracture are discussed, and the main level of fracture is attempted to be allocated, which is about 1-5 micrometers in the investigated case.

Keywords: D16 aluminum; spall fracture; microstructural investigation.
