Abstract

Intrinsic localized modes or discrete breathers (DBs) are spatially localized, large-amplitude vibrational modes in defect-free nonlinear lattices. In this review, recent achievements in the investigation of properties of DBs in carbon and hydrocarbon nanostructures are discussed. After a brief overview of the carbon structures supporting DBs and special conditions for their excitation, the focus is placed on the discussion of properties of various DBs and their clusters in such materials. Then we speculate about the possible role of DBs in the formation of physical and mechanical properties of carbon and hydrocarbon nanomaterials.
