MICROMECHANISMS FOR IMPROVED FRACTURE TOUGHNESS IN NANOCERAMICS

I.A. Ovid'ko and A.G. Sheinerman

Abstract

We present an overview of experimental data, computer simulations and theoretical models on crack growth and its stoppage in nanocrystalline ceramics. The focuses are placed on micromechanisms for improvement of fracture toughness in such ceramic materials. Special attention is paid to theoretical models describing various modes of plastic deformation at the nanoscale level, that enhance the fracture toughness of nanocrystalline ceramics.
