Abstract

Intense plastic deformation of Al-based crystalline multilayers and amorphous ribbons serves as a processing technique to synthesize nanoscale heterogeneous microstructures with improved mechanical properties. Underlying principles of deformation-induced structural transformations are examined including the strong increase in transformation site densities during deformation and the athermal nature of the structural transformations that should be relevant for a wider class of driven system processing techniques.
