INFLUENCE OF THE ω PHASE ON THE TENSILE AND CREEP DEFORMATION MECHANISMS OF α-β TITANIUM ALLOYS

A. Jaworski Jr. And S. Ankem

Abstract

In this investigation the role of the nanocrystalline ω phase on the formation of ω' in the bulk two-phase titanium alloys with Widmanstatten microstructures is examined. The α-ω misfit strain places stress on ω planes that assist the ω→α' transformation, and shear stresses from slip and twinning in the α phase act on the ω→α' transformation shear systems. TEM and HREM were used to measure the α and ω lattice parameters, determine the orientation relationships of α, β, ω, and α' and observe the nature of the α-ω and α-α' interfaces.
