PRESSURE EFFECT ON LUMINESCENCE OF INSULATING CRYSTALS DOPED WITH RARE EARTH IONS.
EVIDENCE FOR TRAPPED EXCITON IN Pr3+ DOPED LiNbO3 AND LiTaO3

M. Grinberg and W. Gryk

Abstract

High pressure photoluminescence of LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 doped with Pr3+ is presented. Analysis of the emission at various pressures and temperatures allowed predicting existence of the Pr3+ trapped exciton consisted with ionized praseodymium Pr4+ and electron bound to the Coulomb potential of trapped hole. We have developed the exciton model and discussed configurational coordinate diagram of the system that explained pressure dependence of the energy of trapped exciton.
