AND Zn INTERLAYERS

Abstract

Bonding of Al-Fe-Ce alloy with Zircaloy-4 was carried out using Cu and Zn interlayers. Microstructural characterization was done using scanning electron microscopy and chemical composition of the phases was determined by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Formation of layered structure was observed in the diffusion zone of bonded structure of Al-Fe-Ce with Zircaloy-4 using Cu as an interlayer. Microhardness of different layers was determined. The results indicate that hardness of the AlZr phase is higher than the Al2Zr3. Microhardness of the bonded alloys also increased due to the small addition of Cu in the lattice. Microhardness of the bonded alloy did not change when the bonding of Al-Fe-Ce with Zircaloy-4 was carried out using Zn coating as an interlayer and a few microcracks were observed in the diffusion zone.
